History of the Inn

| Sam Jones (standing) entertains friends in the Castle dining room. |
The Castle on Silver Lake was built over a long period of time during the 50s, 60s and 70s by Sam Jones of Norfolk, Virginia. Mr. Jones contributed greatly to the economy of Ocracoke, North Carolina, during these times and is considered by many to be a local legend. He is buried on Ocracoke Island with his favorite horse Ikey D at Springer's Point. Most of the original furnishings have long been auctioned off and are scattered all over Ocracoke Island and North Carolina.
The Castle sat vacant for nineteen years before two local businessmen and longtime friends bought it along with the house known as the Whittlers Club. Much thought was put into what was to be done with The Castle on Silver Lake Bed and Breakfast. Because of its historical value and the monument, it has come to honor all the local craftsmen who built it.
Finally, the Castle was split into two halves. One partner took the main building and the other took the back lot and the Whittlers Club. The Castle Courtyard Villas were built on the back lot and the innkeepers at The Castle on Silver Lake manage those properties. You can see more information here. The Whittler's Club is now a private residence. We are proud of the work done and know you will find The Castle on Silver Lake a pleasant place to spend your visit on Ocracoke.

The Innkeepers The Innkeeper of The Castle at Silver Lake is Randy Barrow. Assistant Innkeepers are Nicholas Partington and Mary Bassell.

| Mary & Steve Wright |
Previous Owners Previous owners Mary and Steve Wright worked on the Castle project since 1994. Mary decorated and bought all of the furnishings for both the Castle and the Castle Villas. She was incredibly organized and kept lists to ensure that everything got done. Steve worked well with all types of people, sometimes juggling five or more different crews of people doing various projects. Steve's guidance and vision led these crews to build and name The Castle as Ocracoke's finest accommodations. Without Steve and Mary, there would be no Castle.
